FIRST EDITION THUS, PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo, pp. 159, [1]. Original black boards, spine lettered in gilt, dustjacket printed in red, yellow and black. One opening a little soiled. Boards lightly marked, dustjacket with two small tears to edge, some marks to front panel. Lengthy inscription to flyleaf in the author’s hand.

The greatly-expanded second edition of Smith's only novel, following the privately-printed first of 1947, which Hugh MacDiarmid proclaimed in The Voice of Scotland as 'that tremendous synthetic embodiment of all the uproarious scandalous, drunken life of the city [of Edinburgh]'. This copy has a lengthy inscription from Smith to BBC editor and journalist Robin Richardson, or as Smith has it, 'Monshoveller Rainbone d'Rhindhandsoon, with the complenishments & oferies of the bestest potable' and it is signed 'from his ancient Auk' and dated 28 December 1964.
