Description

FIRST EDITION THUS, folio, pp. xxiv, 324. Numerous engravings within pagination (mostly quarter-page, but six full-page), title-page printed in red and black with large armorial engraved vignette, text in columns of Latin and Italian. Nineteenth-century quarter green roan, marbled boards, spine divided by gilt rolls, red morocco label, other compartments with central blind tooling. Large but faint dampmark to lower corner throughout, a tiny scattering of worm-trails in blank lower margin towards the end, otherwise just some light spotting and soiling. Extremities rubbed, spine ends worn, front joint cracking and hinge splitting after p. vii. Old shelfmark in gold ink to spine, bookplate of Joseph M. Gleason.

Notes

A new translation of Terence's plays into Italian by Niccolò Forteguerri (1674-1735), author of the Ricciardetto, sumptuously illustrated with new engravings after the illustrations of scenes and masks in the Codex Vaticanus Latinus 3868, plus original tail-pieces in a more rococo style.
