Description

2 vols., 8vo, pp. [iv], 675, [1]; [ii], vi, v*- cxxvii*, [ii], viii-638 [recte 683], [1]. Contemporary vellum, boards and turn-ins bordered with a blue rule, spines tooled in gilt, brown morocco labels, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Some spotting. A touch soiled, blue rules partially rubbed away, boards slightly bowed. ‘Bibliotheca Conoviana’ lettered in gilt to front turn-ins, bookseller’s ticket of T. Connolly, Dublin, to pastedown of vol. 1, modern bookplates to pastedowns.

Notes

An attractive set of Terence from the library of Irish journalist Frederick William Conway (1782-1853). The use of blue rules on vellum in the binding gives a hint of Edwards of Halifax, although this example is almost certainly Hibernian. Conway was a prolific collector and his library took 25 days to dispose at auction following his death.
