Description

12mo, pp. [iv], xxxvi, 344 + frontispiece. Contemporary calf, spine divided by raised bands between gilt rules, red morocco label, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt, edges sprinkled blue. Some spotting. Sometime a little crudely rebacked preserving earlier backstrip, joints starting, backstrip darkened, boards somewhat marked. Armorial bookplate of William Congreve Russell to pastedown.

Notes

A collection of trial reports representing the legal background to events in Scott's seventh novel and published the week following the first edition of Heart of Midlothian. Per Todd and Bowden 'the anonymous preface may be attributed to Scott as a person conversant in legal matters,' also noting the preface's references to events in the novel which preceded it to the press by a matter of days.
