Notes

The second edition of the first work of travel writing by Irish Presbyterian minister and missionary Josias Leslie Porter (1823-1889). He spent a decade living in Syria, and wrote several other books on Syria and the surrounding countries. First published in two volumes, this edition was greatly revised, removing some superfluous topographical details and some Greek inscriptions, as in the preface he declares them to have 'served the purpose for which they were originally written' and are 'of little importance to the general reader'.
