Description

Small 4to, pp. [ii], 59, [5, ads] + frontispiece and 11 plates. Original illustrated boards printed in black, blue, and orange. Somewhat soiled, some minor spotting, one plate loose and torn with loss at corners and gutter (the latter just touching the image). Boards soiled, spine sometime recovered in plain paper, extremities worn. Bookplate of Margaret L Stepney (dated 1901) to pastedown, ownership inscription of Margaret Leicester Warren of Tabley to title-page.

Notes

The book is undated, as are others in the series (such as Blue Beard and Little Red Riding Hood, advertised at the rear), but the printer's colophon gives the name of Vizetelly Brothers & Co., which applied between Henry and James forming a partnership after their father's death in 1838 and their falling out and forming separate companies around a decade later. The ads at the rear include forthcoming notices for 'Beauty and the Beast', usually dated to 1843, and 'The Comic Album for Every Table', which was also advertised in newspapers in 1842.
This copy belonged to Margaret Leicester Stepney (nee Warren, 1847-1921) and was evidently initially acquired before her marriage in 1875. Stepney led an outwardly typical upper middle-class life but her diary was privately published in 1924, revealing a lifetime of intense but unfulfilled same-sex attraction.
