Notes

A French translation of John Francis Davis' 'The Chinese', originally published in English in 1836. Davis was Queen Victoria's Chief Superintendent in China and renown Sinologist.
Pasted to the front flyleaf is a clipped portion of a letter from the author. An annotation to the clipping (in Italian) identifies the recipient as Boileau Elliott, i.e. Charles Boileau Elliott, a contemporary travel writer. Davis writes: 'but much time will be yet required, and change of place also - Congratulating you on your election to the best club in London, I remain affectionally your's [sic] J.F. Davis'. Davis may have known Boileau Elliott through a familial connection - Davis's mother's maiden name was Boileau - or through work: Davis worked for the East India Company while Boileau Elliott studied at the East India Company College.
