Description

FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. xv, [i], 140, [2]. Original quarter textured red cloth, red paper boards elaborately blocked in gilt, tan dustjacket printed in red, top edge stained red, other edges rough-trimmed, pictorial endpapers. A little spotting. Dustjacket somewhat dustsoiled, spine panel toned, edges a touch rubbed.

Notes

The first edition of the first appearance of Jane Austen's second volume of juvenilia, with endpapers that reproduce a dozen watercolour medallion portraits of kings and queens painted by her sister Cassandra Austen. Initially published on 12 June 1922, it proved hugely popular, with second and third impressions following later in June and in July. Now rare in first impression and especially so in dustjacket.
