Notes

The preface to this work begins 'The following brief notice of the Life of George Heriot originated in a perusal of the Fortunes of Nigel, by the Author of Waverley, where he appears as a prominent and interesting character.' Todd and Bowden note that 'though the Memoirs are sometimes attributed to Constable, the publisher, the preliminary "Sketch of the Life (pages 2-48) may owe something to Scott.'
