Description

FIRST EDITION, 2 vols., 8vo, pp. iv, 260; iv, 241, [3]. Modern full calf, spines divided by raised bands between gilt rules, black morocco labels lettered in gilt, boards bordered with blind rule. Some spotting and toning. A few tiny marks to binding, spines a touch sunned.

Notes

The first edition of Browning's first poetry collection published after his marriage to Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Now considered some of his finest work, it was poorly received at the time and did not sell well. The final poem is dedicated to Elizabeth, where he refers to the preceding poems as 'my fifty men and women'.
