Description

4to, pp. xvi, 241, [1]. Frontispiece and numerous illustrations included in pagination. Contemporary red morocco, boards bordered with a double gilt rule enclosing a gilt frame and central gilt lozenge, spine divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, second compartment gilt-lettered direct, the othrs with central gilt tools, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Half-title somewhat foxed. Rubbed, some marks and slight wear, endpapers foxed.

Notes

A compilation from earlier emblem books, elaborately designed in high Victorian style. The binding may be a publisher's deluxe variant, as near-identical tooling and material is known on at least one other copy - though the standard cloth, blocked in black and gilt in strapwork style, is if anything even more striking.
