The second edition of Athénaïs Michelet's (1826-1899) lyrical survey of the natural world, and her first major publication since her husband Jules Michelet's death. The pair greatly admired each other's work, and collaborated on four books during their marriage. At the close of the introduction, Michelet writes 'In the midst of death, I have sought to affirm the existence of life. True grief is fertile. It enlarges our hearts.' Beautifully illustrated by Hector Giacomelli (1822-1904), the book explores the subjects of the garden, pastoral, woodland, mountain, river, and lake scenery, and the sea.
