FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. vi, 281, [3] + 2 colour plates. Later half calf by Birdsall & Son, marbled boards, spine divided by double gilt rules and lettered direct in gilt. Just a little spotting. Leather a touch rubbed, spine lightly sunned. Armorial bookplate of Sir James Reid, Bart, to pastedown.

Notes

The first edition of this medical book by Alexander Munro tertius (1773-1859), the third and last of a dynastic line that held the professorship of anatomy at the University of Edinburgh for 126 years. The two plates, here bound at the rear of the volume, illustrate smallpox sores.
This copy belonged to Sir James Reid, the Scottish doctor who served as physician-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria (for which service he was awarded a baronetcy in 1897), Edward VII and George V.
