FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp.xlii, 504; iv, 588 + frontispiece. Original brown cloth, boards blocked in blind, spines lettered direct in gilt. Bindings somewhat marked and soiled, some wear to extremities and spine-ends, one joint splitting at head but secure. Ownership inscriptions of Robert Scott Fittis to flyleaves dated 11 June 1860, bookplates of Sandeman Public Library, Perth, to pastedowns, small manuscript shelf labels to spines.

Notes

A compilation of 'remarkable outbreaks of popular phrenzy' (p.vi) takes in ancient sorcery, the Inquisition, lycanthropy, 'The Flagellation Mania', Joan of Arc and demonopathy. It was written by historian and abolitionist Richard Robert Madden (1798-1886), best-remembered today for his 7-volume history of Ireland.
This copy belonged to antiquarian Robert Scott Fittis (1824-1903).
