Description

A little shaken, stitching strained in places, small sections of last 2 ad leaves torn away not touching text. A little soiled, spine cloth rippled, a little wear to extremities. Gift inscription to flyleaf: ‘C.P. Doig from H.H.M., 6th Dec. 1894 “forsitan et haec olim meminisse juvabit”‘.

Notes

The first edition of Conan Doyle's collection of stories inspired by his time in the medical profession, which he had abandoned in 1890 to turn full-time to writing, following the great success of his Sherlock Holmes stories. Despite the somewhat dry subtitle, this volume contains the first book appearance of the much-anthologised horror story 'Lot No. 249', in which an Egyptology student reanimates a mummy and sets it against his enemies.
