Description

4to, ff. [101]. A scrapbook album of mounted specimens bound in red cloth, spine and front board blocked in gilt, rear board blocked in blind, manuscript label to front board. A number of leaves wrinkled, one or two a bit worn, some soiling. Cloth rubbed and darkened, rebacked preserving original backstrip, label darkened and partly worn away, first leaf containing a manuscript note largely abraded. Modern bookplate to front pastedown.

Notes

A substantial scrapbook containing printed speciments of turning, mostly mounted to rectos only. A handful of pages are noted 'Savory' in ink suggesting the designs were taken from H.S. Savory's book of patterns from Plant's Geometric Chuck (1873), though they are not simply clipped out from that book. The title above is taken from the handwritten label on the front board. The first leaf has a few lines of manuscript that tantalisingly begin 'This book was', though the rest is too abraded to make out.
