Notes

Stevenson's penultimate and unfinished novel, completed by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. The story was serialised in the Pall Mall Magazine between November 1896 and November 1897 and the American edition was issued shortly afterward, dated 1897 on the title-page. This British edition is dated the following year and normally assumed to follow the American, but the evidence of this copy's inscription indicates that it was on sale by the end of October 1897.
