FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 63, [1]. Some illustrations printed in black and orange. Original pictorial boards, colour-printed dustjacket replicating the design of the boards. Top edge of dustjacket a touch rubbed and nicked, short tear to bottom edge, spine panel slightly toned. Pencil ownership inscription to flyleaf.

An attractive copy of the first edition of this collection of Tolkien's verse, containing a mixture of previously-uncollected and previously-unpublished poetry relating to the mythos of Middle-Earth, with a mock-scholarly preface that situates the Red Book of the subtitle in the history of The Shire, and attributes some of the work to Hobbits Frodo and Samwise Gamgee. 10,000 copies were produced for the Christmas market and it was immediately reprinted, but with two poems re-ordered and one of them losing the orange element from its illustration.
