Notes

The first complete edition of American folklorist Francis James Child's magisterial survey of British ballads, published over 16 years, with the final volume produced posthumously from his notes. It was issued in ten parts, but with the tenth volume a set of new title-pages and contents-leaves for binding the set in 5 volumes were included, along with a new introduction and a frontispiece, and an instruction leaf for the binder. In this copy the rearrangement has not been done but the extra material remains to the rear of the tenth volume as issued. This copy also retains the one-page prospectus, advertising the book as being published by subscription only, and dated 1882, bound in to the rear of vol. 1.
