Notes

A scarce chapbook detailing the life and prophecies of 16th-century soothsayer Usula Southeil, Mother Shipton. This example was printed locally to be sold at the 'dropping well' - a mineral-rich spring which petrifies objects left in it - that adjoins the cave where Shipton is supposed to have lived and which has operated as a tourist attraction since the 17th century. Although similar chapbooks are recorded across the north of England (and as far north as Stirling) in the first half of the 19th century, we can find no record of this or any other Langdale edition in any of the major library catalogues.
