An early chapbook edition of this gothic short story, first published in Blackwood's in 1830 and an influence on Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum, as well as on Charlotte Brontë and Mrs Gaskell. The titular iron shroud is a room that shrinks with each passing day until the prisoner is crushed inside. This may be its first separate appearance: it was also published also as a undated Glasgow chapbook, which most sources speculate was the following year.
