8vo, pp. [iii]-xx, [ii], 534. Half-title and advertisement leaf discarded. Later half calf, marbled boards, spine divided by gilt-rolled raised bands, black morocco label, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt, edges sprinkled red. Small stain to upper corner at beginning, a few minor spots. Spine slightly sunned and marked, extremities just a touch rubbed.

Notes

The second edition of Boswell's 'teaser' for his magisterial Life of Johnson, a record of the pair's journey through the Highlands to the Hebrides and a companion to Johnson's own 'Journey to the Western Islands'. Among the notable contents are Johnson's sceptical remarks on the authenticity of the Ossian poems, then at the height of their popularity.
