Description

12mo, pp. [5]-64 + hand-coloured frontispiece. Partially unopened and stitched as issued in original blue sugar-paper wrappers printed in black. A little spotting and light toning, some offsetting to title-page. A little creased and nicked to edges, some wear to spine covering.

Notes

Despite the London imprint this is a seemingly-unrecorded production of the York printer and chapbook publisher James Kendrew, active between 1803 and 1838, and an unusual survival in its wrappers. The text is a collection of humorous stories and anecdotes that seems to have its roots in a similarly-titled volume first recorded in 1790, although the 'odd sermons' in its forbear's title and moralistic tone have been substantially toned-down for this edition. It has a charming hand-coloured frontispiece which is different from (and indeed, a deal more detailed and colourful than) George Cruikshanks' effort for Dean and Munday's 1820 edition, and is sadly uncredited. We can find no trace of it in any library catalogues, and have dated it from the rear wrapper's advertisements for Kendrew's other publications, which includes a life of Napoleon.
