Description

FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [166]. Half-title sometime excised. Near-contemporary half calf, marbled boards, brown morocco label, spine tooled in gilt, edges sprinkled red. A touch toned, just a little spotting. A little rubbed. Gift inscription to flyleaf: J.M. Wood From M.W.D., 1839′.

Notes

An attractive facing-page dual-language edition of Anacreon's odes, by Rev. Thomas Gilpin. It reached a second edition in 1806. Gilpin has not translated the 29th ode 'as there are several expressions [...] which might give offence to a delicate ear if verbally translated', per the preface.
