Description

3 vols, 12mo, pp. [iv], 172; [iv], 176; [iv], 156. Contemporary mottled calf, boards bordered with a gilt roll, spines divided by raised bands between gilt rolls, green morocco labels, edges sprinkled blue. Some marginal worming to rear of vol. 2, small internal tear to half-title of vol. 1. A little rubbed, spines lightly creased, front joint of vol. 1 starting. Armorial bookplates of William Peter to pastedowns, his ownership signature to half-title of vol. 2 dated 1799.

Notes

This Foulis printing of Pope's Odyssey complements their 1771 printing of his Iliad and though published separately they were often bound together, as in this case where the labels are numbered 5-7 on the spines. Vol. 1 in this set has an extra gathering at the end not called for by Gaskell, but conforms in all other respects.
