Description

Contemporary marbled calf, spines divided by gilt rules, red morocco labels and green circular numbering pieces, edges sprinkled blue. Some spotting and soiling. Extremities just a touch rubbed, two small spots of insect damage to joints. Engraved bookplates of Sir James Gordon Bart of Letterfoury.

Notes

An attractive copy of the fourth London printing of Ramsay's collected poems, the first to update the contents from how they had appeared in the author's lifetime. It adds substantial prefatory matter including remarks by Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee and a life of the poet by the editor, George Chalmers (1742-1825), and formed the basis of most further printings until the Scottish Text Society's decades-long scholarly edition in the 20th century.
