FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS, 3 vols., 8vo, pp. [ii], xx, cxxxiv, [vi], 153, [1] + frontispiece; [ii], 372; [ii], 334, [2]. Contemporary calf, boards bordered with double gilt rules enclosing triple blind rules and blind corner-pieces, spines divided by raised bands gilt, red and brown morocco labels, other compartments tooled in gilt, edges gilt, hidden fore-edge painting to each volume. Sometime rebacked preserving earlier backstrips, hinges relined with contrasting cloth tape, old leather a little rubbed and marked. Armorial bookplates of Robert Stirling Newall to pastedowns.

Notes

The fore-edge paintings depict three views of early nineteenth-century London: Highgate Village in 1800, Hungerford Market, Charing Cross, in 1820 and Bishopsgate Street in 1830, the latter taken from an engraving by T.H. Shepherd.
