Notes

A scarce pocket edition of the poems of Burns, which Library Hub locates in NLS only. This copy has an ink sketch and transcription of the grave of fellow Scottish poet Robert Fergusson (1750-1774), the stone of which was paid for by Burns, to the blank verso of the title-page, dated Sunday Dec. 23, 1821. The artist has accurately rendered the shape and lettering of the stone, including the four-line epitaph by Burns, and had added imaginary buttresses topped with lamp-posts, between which is strung a banner with a twelve-line elegy for Burns, adapted from the poet's own Elegy on Captain Matthew Henderson.
