8vo, pp. 383, [1] + frontispiece and 6 maps (2 of which folding). Original pale blue cloth, front board bordered with a blind rule, spine lettered in black. Stitching slightly strained in places, binding lightly soiled, a little bumped to edges, a touch rubbed to extremities. Ownership inscription of J. Mackenzie, Glasgow, to verso of frontispiece.


The third edition - designated the 'cheap edition' - of Winston Churchill's first book, originally published in 1898, detailing the siege and relief of a British garrison in present-day Pakistan. Churchill was attached to the relief force as second lieutenant. This copy, although undoubtedly a publisher's binding, is lettered in black to the spine rather than gilt as Woods states.
