FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. vi, [ii], 375, [1], 32 [ads]. Original green cloth, front board printed in bronze, spine lettered direct in gilt. A little shaken, spine slightly darkened, a little wear to extremities and spine-ends. Ownership inscriptions of W. Fordyce Clark dated Xmas 1894 and modern ownership inscription dated 1972 to flyleaf, sheet of contemporary press opinions tipped-in to pastedown.

Notes

The first edition of this Viking romance that was very influential in shaping to annual Up Helly Aa festivities, giving them their Viking theme. Burgess also wrote the Up Helly Aa Song, sung at every iteration of the festival since 1897. This copy belonged to his fellow Shetland author and antiquarian, W. Fordyce Clark.
