Description

25 vols., 8vo, frontispiece to each volume and numerous engraved plates. Contemporary red prize morocco by Townsend of Sheffield, boards bordered with a double gilt rule enclosing a gilt roll, spines divided by raised bands, 2nd and 4th compartments lettered direct in gilt, other compartments tooled elaborately in gilt, edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A touch of spotting, a little offsetting from some plates. A little light rubbing in places, a few spines just a touch sunned. Presentation leaf bound in to Waverley from Sheffield District Incorporated Law Society to Reginald Thorpe Wilson dated 1892, circular monogram of the Society blocked in gilt to centre of front boards.

Notes

An attractively-bound set that was presented to a Reginald Thorpe Wilson, Esq., B.A. 'as an honorary distinction' after Wilson had served his clerkship. it is a handsome binding by Sheffield firm of Townsend and Son; the elder William Townsend is recorded as being active from 1830, and so by the 1890s the business would have passed to his son. The younger Townsend, also called William, carried the business on into the 20th century,
