A sharp example of the first and finest set of Stevenson's works, begun with the author's approval shortly before his death. Initially intended to fill 20 volumes, subscribers received a total of 27 numbered volumes plus an 'appendix' of miscellanea and facsimiles of small works. It set such a standard that in the following decade a half dozen supplementary volumes were issued in matching bindings by other publishers, though unnumbered and not properly part of the edition - letters in two volumes, a 'life' in two volumes, Prideaux's bibliography, and Hammerton's Stevensoniana. This set is accompanied by the Stevensoniana volume.
