Description

4to, pp. [xvi], 255, [1]. Contemporary sheep, boards ruled in blind. Toned and spotted, some light staining, occasional side-notes shaved, fore-edge of title-page cropped removing the last letter of five lines, these early on supplied in manuscript to a blank tipped to the verso. Binding sometime rebacked in calf with manuscript paper label to spine, hinges splitting and first and last leaves starting to pull away, overall rather marked and worn, particularly to forecorners.

Notes

The second edition (first 1636) of this treatise by the nonconformist minister Thomas Goodwin (1600-1680), whose works were 'representative of English experimental Calvinism, though he drew back from the extremes of the doctrine of preparation associated with Hooker' (ODNB). He was widely read, including numerous translations into European languages, and here attempts to grapple with the Calvinistic paradox that God appears to allow everyone, including innocents, to suffer in his absence.
