Description

4to, pp. xvi, 627, [1]. Contemporary tree calf, spine divided by gilt rolls, black morocco label, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt, edges speckled red. Two marginal paper flaws not touching text. Sometime rebacked and recornered preserving original backstrip, hinges relined, old leather a little scratched. Armorial bookplates of H.F. Davies of Elmley Castle and William Battell to pastedown, the latter of whom has signed his name ‘W. Battell’ to the foot of two leaves by incorporating the signature marks of gatherings B and Bb into his name, with the lowercase b of the second gathering amended to form the a of Battell.

Notes

A single-volume selection from the historical collections of John Somers, 1st Baron Somers (1951-1716), taken from the 16-volume set published between 1748 and 1752. The chronological ordering instituted here was also the principle for the second edition of the multi-volume work, edited by Walter Scott beginning in 1809.
