Notes

An early collection of printed music by Scottish fiddler Niel Gow (1727-1807), all undated, but with a handful of institutional holdings suggesting dates in the last years of the 18th century. The first volume advertises the availability of the second collection in the imprint, and in the second volume the reciprocal advertisement is just visible, most of the imprint being obscured by a pasted-on and since partially-removed label. Volume three bears the imprint of N.&M. Stewart, Library Hub records just a single copy, at Edinburgh, who posit a date of 1795, noting that the collection was first published in 1792. The final selection here gathered was printed by Gow and Shepherd in their shop at 41 North Bridge, where they were trading between 1796 and 1801, giving us a terminus date for its production. Gow's sons produced a fifth and sixth volume after his death but these four form a coherent and consecutive lifetime set, in a contemporary binding.
