Description

12mo, pp. [ii], 154. Leaf L1 an unusual composite of two separate leaves each printed on one side only and stuck together, and seemingly also a cancellans (see below). Untrimmed in original blue paper wrappers backed in white paper. Some soiling, a dampstain to a few leaves at rear. Wrappers soiled and worn, spine largely defective, stitching partially broken. Some old calculations and pen trials to rear wrapper.

Notes

An unsophisticated copy of a rare anonymous history of Scotland, with a bibliographically curious leaf. The first leaf of gathering L is in this copy a thin leaf printed verso only, with a thicker leaf printed recto only pasted to it. Comparison with one of the NLS copies (as per the scan in ECCO) reveals that the recto here has several variant (mistaken) readings, including a spelling error in the running head and 'both' for 'cloth' in line 17 of the text. It seems likely that this copy preserves a cancellans with typographical errors - but the structure of the leaf is less explicable.
ESTC locates six copies: Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews, NLS x2, and the Huntington alone outside Scotland.
