This guide to Blackpool has its genesis, per his preface to the second edition printed here, when poet and historian William Hutton (1723-1815) found himself 'struck with the place,' and went into partnership with a consortium of landlords to produce the first edition in 1788. They neglected to pay him, so Hutton produced a second edition in 1804, which he hoped would be more successful for him, although a posthumous postscript from the publishers introducing this third edition to the effect that 'a fire destroyed nearly all the copies of the second edition,' would suggest otherwise. Copac records 8 copies, most in the north of England.
