A significant dictionary of late Middle and Early Modern English by the Shakespearean scholar and biblioclast James Orchard Halliwell, who had become Halliwell-Phillipps in 1872 following the death of his father-in-law, the bibliomaniac Thomas Phillipps, with whom he had been in conflict since eloping in the face of his objections. First published in the 1840s, it was a steady seller and saw further editions through the rest of Halliwell-Phillipps's life.
