Notes

The first British printing of this translation by American author and diplomat Rasmus B. Anderson (1846-1936) of the 1860 novel "En glad gut' by Norwegian writer Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832-1910). Though English translations had appeared as early as 1869, Anderson collaborated with Bjørnson and published 'author's editions' of all his works in the 1880s first in Boston then in London. In the preface, Anderson calls this 'Bjørnson's best story of peasant life'.
