Notes

A rare anonymously-published letter, attributed to the Church of Scotland minister and campaigner William Porteous (1735-1812), that attempts to appeal to the better angels of the Glasgow citizenry to 'preserve life', that is, the poor. Most of the pamphlet is composed of tables with the names, ages, trade and economy of various persons then living in poverty within the parishes of Glasgow in order to illustrate how public funds could be distributed to their aid. ESTC locates only half a dozen copies, half of them in Glasgow, with the others in the BL, Columbia, and a private collection (apparently a copy belonging to Forbes of Pitsligo held in the NLS).
