Description

FIRST PITHOU EDITION, 8vo, pp. [xii], 302, [10]. Eighteenth-century sheep, boards bordered with a gilt dotted rule, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Substantial wormtrails to lower margin, often touching a character and on about 30 leaves causing loss of a word or two, just some foxing and toning otherwise. Binding rather rubbed and worn, with loss particularly to spine, but sound, fragments of spine label loosely inserted. Purchase inscription dated 1836 to front endpaper, Robert Estienne’s name in imprint censored in early ink.

Notes

The supremely important edition of Juvenal edited by Pierre Pithou, who had discovered the Montpellier manuscript ('P' in the critical tradition), generally accepted to be the principal surviving manuscript examplar of the text. Pithou's text formed the basis of most editions subsequently until the manuscript itself was rediscovered and re-collated in the mid-19th-century.
