A treatise by the successful expatriate Scots bookseller John Knox (1720-1790) 'which argued—understandably—that transport links in the highlands had to be improved, and advocated the construction of what became the Crinan and Caledonian canals' (ODNB). Knox was also deeply concerned with the fishing industry and successfully advocated numerous policies to promote it in Scotland, including establishing fishing stations in the Highlands and Islands.
