Description

FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. vii, [i], 312, 16 (ads). Numerous illustrations within pagination, including a frontispiece and 20 others full-page. Original brick-red cloth, spine and front board blocked pictorially in black and gilt. A few spots, light creasing in places. Cloth slightly marked, spine ends and corners a touch worn, hinges strained. Prize bookplate from Clare Hall Academy, Edinburgh, completed in manuscript to Andrew Scott, first prize for Latin & English, 1873.

Notes

An account of a fruitless search for gold, in which 'the author's party visited Zululand and Matabeleland, and had an interview with Cetywayo, of whom a portrait is given, showing the Zulu prince as a very young man' (Mendelssohn). Mendelssohn had only the second edition, also undated, and some catalogues assign both editions to as early as 1870, though the ads here include almanacks for 1872.
