Description

Oblong 8vo photograph album, ff. [24] containing 184 photographs, most 112 x 68 mm, mounted on grey card. Imitation snakeskin boards. A little rubbed to extremities. Bookseller’s ticket of Arthur Holloway, Stationer, Scarborough, to rear pastedown.

Notes

A record of a year in Europe by Yorkshire greyhound breeder C.B. Fryer. The majority of the pictures are from the Crans-Montana area of Switzerland, including several views of 'Montana Hall', which operated as a sanatorium for British TB sufferers - Fryer seems likely to have been a patient there.
The album is organised and annotated with details of the views; the photographs are additionally annotated to their reverses with further details. Fryer records an excursion into Italy over the Simplon Pass, views of Nuremburg, Cologne and the Rhine, Vienna, and the environs of Lake Balaton, Hungary. The Swiss photographs are a mixture of scenic alpine views, some candid shots of life at the Sanatorium, and some record of winter sports - curling and ski-ing at Crans.
