Oblong folio, ff. [42] + 36 original oil paintings mounted on 28 leaves. Tissue guards remain between many leaves. Original vellum, boards and spine blocked in gilt, white silk endpapers, all edges gilt. Tissue guards foxed, pages and paintings not much affected, a few pages loose, some pages have been excised. Binding a little rubbed and dustsoiled. Ink ownership inscription of George Anna Leacock to first leaf, dated ‘Rome Jan. 3rd, 1865’.
A substantial album of original oil paintings by an accomplished amateur, recording scenes of a kind of Grand Tour evidently undertaken between summer 1864 and summer 1865. The first paintings are of the Swiss Alps and dated early August. The scenes then move south to Rome across the winter, reach Naples in Spring 1865, dip into Spain, and then return to Switzerland, the last being dated August 13 at Neuchatel. We have not been able to firmly identify any details of the artist's life.
