FIRST EDITION, 2 vols., 4to, pp. [viii], 409, [3]; [ii], 431, [3] + frontispiece in vol. 1 and 8 plates in vol. 2. Contemporary half russia, marbled boards, spines divided by raised bands between gilt rules, lettered in gilt direct. Toned, some foxing (particularly at beginning), a few leaves creased. Rubbed at extremities, some scratches, front joint of vol. 1 cracked and spine worn at head.


The principal work of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo (1739-1806), a substantial biography of his close friend the philosopher James Beattie (1735-1803).
