Notes
A significant speech by the Unitarian preacher William Ellery Channing (1780-1842) in favour of the abolition of slavery, citing the British emancipation process in the Caribbean, both given and printed in the Massachusetts town of Lenox. It was possibly this pamphlet that led Longfellow to pen his five-stanza poem 'To William E. Channing' in his collection 'Poems on Slavery' which begins 'The pages of thy book I read, And as I closed each one My heart, responding, ever said, "Servant of God! well done!"' In a note to a collected works from 1878, Longfellow writes that he penned the collection including this poem in 'in the latter part of October, 1842', while Channing died on October 2nd of that year.
