Contemporary red morocco, boards bordered with triple gilt rules enclosing floral gilt corner-pieces, spines divided by triple gilt rules and lettered and numbered direct in gilt, other compartments tooled in gilt, edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Just a little rubbed. Bookplates of Edouard Bouglé and Marchal to front endpapers.

Notes

A scarce pocket edition of Julien-Jacques Moutonnet-Clairfons's 1773 translation of Anacreon and other bucolic Greek poets. The first printing was in octavo format with a Paphos imprint but a Paris bookseller's name (Boucher); further printings in 1775 and 1780 were still 'a Paphos' but now also 'chez Bastien'. This pocket edition, which reproduces the frontispiece in smaller format but none of the other illustrations and with no printer or publisher information, is probably a piracy but this copy is presented in a beautiful contemporary binding. Worldcat records 9 copies, the majority in American institutions.
