Original full calf, boards blocked in blind with 8 small shields in Celtic knotwork patterns, metal studs to centres as bosses, front board lettered direct in gilt above more knotwork in blind all within a triangle of gilt and blind rules, spine with sword and shield design blocked in black and blind, brown morocco labels, edges gilt. Rear board detached and front board nearly so, binding after p. 26 splitting at gutter, a little scratched and rubbed, some wear to extremities.

Notes

This large-format, lavish reproduction of colour plates of swords, shields, muskets and other assorted weaponry was issued in a trade binding of quarter calf, but this copy, which comes from the archive of the publisher, is in full calf, with the same design to the spine as on the standard binding, and heavy, studded boards - too heavy in this instance as they have broken the joints and come loose. This copy is unnumbered on the limitation-page - possibly a handful were bound in a deluxe variant for presentation, although this copy has no inscriptions and remained in the publisher's possession.
