FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, 12mo, pp. [iv], 400, 2 (ads). Near-contemporary half black calf, marbled boards, spine divided by double gilt rules and lettered in gilt direct, edges sprinkled red. Some spotting and scattered toning. Somewhat rubbed, light wear to extremities. Half-title inscribed ‘From the Author’, ownership inscription of to flyleaf.

Notes

The first edition of Scottish novelist John Galt's best-remembered work, which reached a second edition the following year. This copy has a presentation inscription, probably secretarial, to the half-title.
